The little village of Osterville, located on the south shore of Cape Cod's sprawling town of Barnstable, was first known as Oyster Island Village.

Miles Standish, who knew a good thing when he saw it, bought the land from the Indians. The year: 1648. A hundred and ninety years later, in 1838, the town was prosperous enough to erect the Baptist Church, seen here in the center of the painting. Across from it is the Daniel Block, which houses, among other enterprises, the historic Osterville News.
